Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Video Audition Option

Submit all of the following

A selection of ballet barre work, exercises on one side only

A selection of ballet center work including adagio, pirouette combination, and petite allegro combination

A modern or contemporary phrase that travels, includes floor work, and returns to standing, with some jumps

A solo of 1-2 minutes, preferably modern or contemporary, choreographed by you or another artist

In-Person Audition Option

Submit one of the following video materials

A solo video, improvised or set choreography

A small-group piece where you are clearly visible

A filmed center exercise

Additional Materials

Resume (Required)

Dance resume listing prior experience: type of training, names of teachers and schools attended, years studied, number of classes per week

Photograph (for in-Person Auditions)

8×10 photograph, preferably full-length in dance attire

Name, address, and telephone number printed on the back

What's The Process

Audition Process

In-person audition on Hofstra's South Campus (Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, Room 209)

Video audition submission also accepted via Acceptd

Preferably all materials received by mid-January 2026, but accepted at any time (rolling admissions)

A personal interview with a member of the dance faculty is required prior to registration as a BFA major

BFA admission (audition required)

Placement in technique classes for both BA and BFA

Evaluation for Dance Grant-in-Aid scholarship awards

Audition consists of two one-hour technique classes: Ballet followed by Modern

Approximately 20 dancers chosen for scholarship consideration will present a short solo (no longer than 1-2 minutes)

Scholarship Info

Dance Grant-in-Aid awards $500-$5,000/year, renewable. Based on potential as dancer and contribution to program. In addition to university scholarships.
