Prescreen Requirements

Songs

Requirements

•Two Contrasting songs, 60-90 sec each

•One song written before 1970 (musical theater, Golden Age, pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.)

•One song written after 1970 — should contrast the style of the first selection

•Must sing to musical accompaniment — no a cappella

•Recommended waist-up frame

Monologues

Requirements

•One monologue, 60-90 sec

•From a published play or written by a professional writer (someone whose plays have been produced, but may not have been professionally published)

Dance

Requirements

•One Dance SOLO, 60-90 sec

•Must include at least one turn, one jump, and one kick (or suitable rotation, elevation, and extension)

•Any style: jazz, ballet, tap, modern, hip-hop, lyrical, contemporary, or styles beyond American and Euro-western

•Must be performed to music — no a cappella dance

•May be self-choreographed but must be a solo video

•Full-body frame — keep entire person visible at all times

•Do not submit barre work — offer a supplemental Ballet submission instead

Ballet

Requirements

•Optional ballet, 60 sec max

•Brief series of plié, tendu, and grande battement

•Pirouette en déhors (to both sides)

•One or more grand jeté across the floor

•Full-body frame

Wildcard / Special Skill (Optional)

•Anything you want — a special skill, an interesting story about yourself, a passion speech, an instrument you play, etc. Prompt: "What do you want us to know about you?" and "What makes you unique?" Length: 60–90 seconds. No slate required in wild card media.

Application Logistics

•Submit the University of Hartford application before audition registration

•Prescreen videos may be uploaded through the UHart Applicant Portal at no charge or through Acceptd for a separate fee

•Early Action is not available for BFA Music Theatre

•University application review begins on a rolling basis in late September; Hartt applications submitted after Feb. 15 are considered only as space allows

•No late prescreens are reviewed

•Program participates in the Musical Theater Common Prescreen; Hartt publishes its current song, monologue, dance, and optional ballet requirements on the official theatre audition page

Eligibility

•Each piece uploaded as a separate video file

•Applicants who pass the prescreen will be invited to an in-person callback

•Callback includes: songs, monologue, and group dance call

•Virtual callback available if you live 300+ miles from CT or have travel restrictions — contact harttadm@hartford.edu

•Virtual callbacks may not be available in some cases

Scholarship Info

•Performing Arts Scholarship: All accepted students automatically considered based on audition; awards range up to full tuition

•Renewable annually for the length of the program with a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA (or 3.0 in major) and full-time status

•No separate scholarship application required
