Scholarship Audition Requirements

Optional audition for scholarship consideration only; it is not required for program admission.

Dance

In-Person Audition

Perform a solo of 1.5 minutes or less in any dance style or genre that best demonstrates artistic and performance skills

Choreography may be the applicant's own or set by another choreographer

Participate in brief technique classes: ballet (pointe shoes optional), modern (bare feet), and West African (bare feet)

Bring a digital recording of solo music on a phone or similar device

Video Audition

Opens with a brief spoken interview: state your name, then answer short questions about using dance for change and your college goals

Ballet technique: barre work (tendus, rond de jambe par terre, grand battements), center adagio (extensions, promenades, pirouettes), petit allegro with batterie, and grand allegro

Modern technique: a center combination showing spinal articulation, parallel leg position, floor work, and off-vertical extensions, plus a traveling combination with turns, jumps, and leaps

West African technique: a movement phrase rooted in West African or African Diasporic forms, which may include hip-hop, tap, jazz, or Afrobeats/Afropop

Solo of 1.5 minutes or less in the applicant's chosen style or genre, original or set choreography

Equal proficiency across genres is not expected — Goucher evaluates potential

Good to Know

Application Logistics

Dance scholarship auditions are optional for admission to Goucher and the Dance major.

Apply to Goucher College through the Common Application by January 15, 2027 to be eligible for a dance scholarship.

Complete the Dance Scholarship Application after applying to Goucher College; registration for the 2027 cycle has not yet opened — check the Dance Scholarship Auditions page for the current link.

Eligible scholarship applicants choose an in-person, video, or Dancewave audition.

All applicants who audition are notified of scholarship results by email in late February.

Enrollment

All students take a placement class during Fall Orientation to determine technique level.

Placement assigns class level only; it is not an admission requirement.

What's The Process

Audition Process

An audition is not required for admission to Goucher or for the Dance major.

First-year Dance-major applicants may audition for an optional talent scholarship through an in-person audition, video submission, or Dancewave.

In-person scholarship auditions are held Sunday, February 14, 2027.

Video scholarship audition submissions are due Wednesday, February 3, 2027.

Dancewave auditionees do not need to re-audition but must apply to Goucher and complete the scholarship application.

Scholarship Info

Dance Talent Scholarships

$1,000-$10,000 per year (potential total: $4,000-$40,000 over four years)

Awarded based on scholarship application, audition, and dance faculty recommendation

Available to all first-year applicants planning to major in dance

Renewable each year for up to 8 semesters with full-time enrollment as a dance major in good academic standing

Awarded in addition to any other merit scholarship
