Audition Requirements

Repertoire

Two contrasting classical selections on your principal instrument that best demonstrate your current performance level

Selections should contrast in style and/or period

Choose pieces with published, written notation when possible

Suggested per-instrument repertoire and difficulty levels are published on the Adams School repertoire list

Scales & Technique

Many instruments include scales and technical work, including major and harmonic minor scales for strings and percussion, four-octave major, melodic, and harmonic minor scales for piano, and snare drum, keyboard percussion, and timpani for percussionists

Review the repertoire list for your instrument-specific technical expectations

Accompaniment

An accompanist is not provided for instrumental auditions

Bring your own collaborative pianist if your repertoire requires accompaniment

Application Logistics

Must be accepted to Gordon College before auditioning

Complete the Adams School Music Major/Minor Application to choose an audition date

Live auditions are strongly recommended; recorded auditions are accepted only when students cannot attend any live audition dates

December 4 audition application deadline: November 19, 2026

February 15, February 19, or February 20 audition application deadline: January 31, 2027

April 9 audition application deadline: March 31, 2027

Premier Music Leadership Award and Music Education Honors Award: apply by January 31, 2027 and audition by February 20

Stackable Music Major/Minor Scholarships: apply by March 31, 2027 and audition by April 9

Recorded auditions must be submitted through Acceptd when live attendance is not possible

DVDs, CDs, YouTube links, and other media are not reviewed

Placement

Admitted students complete piano and voice proficiency examinations for course placement only — not part of admission

Audition Format

Live auditions at Gordon College are strongly recommended

Recorded video auditions are accepted only when distance, timing, or extenuating circumstances prevent live attendance

Recorded videos must be submitted via Acceptd

Personal Interview

The audition committee conducts a personal interview with all prospective music students

Audition Day
