Audition Requirements

Repertoire by Area

Voice: two contrasting art songs; one in English and one in German, French, or Italian

Voice repertoire option: applicants may sing a third musical theater song

Piano: three contrasting pieces demonstrating artistry and technique

Strings, winds, brass, and percussion: two contrasting works or movements plus scales listed on the instrument page

Percussion: snare drum, timpani, and keyboard percussion with major scales on keyboard percussion

Application Logistics

Apply to Gettysburg College via Common App

Complete the Music Profile Form before conservatory audition appointments are scheduled

If submitting a recording, upload audition videos through the Gettysburg applicant portal after submitting the college application

Admission Pathway

Complete the online music theory assessment as part of the audition process

The assessment is diagnostic and determines music theory placement; it is not an entrance exam

Program Requirements

Students earn Pennsylvania K-12 music teaching certification after completing all degree and state requirements

Acceptance into music teacher education occurs in the spring of the sophomore year via sophomore assessment and interview, with teacher-education admission in the fall of the junior year

Piano proficiency and state education exams are required

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

Audition in-person on campus or submit a video recording

Perform on your principal instrument or voice; recordings should include scales unless the instrument page notes otherwise

In-person auditions include a faculty interview and aural skills assessment

Video submitters complete a virtual appointment for the faculty interview and sight-reading

The faculty interview explores teaching interest and disposition alongside the performance evaluation

Jazz Focus (Optional)

Students pursuing a jazz focus perform their instrument's audition requirements PLUS the jazz focus requirements

Sunderman Conservatory Scholarships

F. William Sunderman Scholarship — $50,000/year for top musicians pursuing a music major

Parker B. Wagnild Scholarship — $42,000/year for music majors, minors, and select non-majors

Elizabeth Headley Paul '64 Memorial Scholarship — at least $8,000/year (keyboard/piano preference)

The Patrick Grant — need-based grant for music majors or minors

Must submit a complete financial aid application

All scholarships renewable annually based on academic and musical progress
