Training

The Brass emphasis maintains concentrated applied work on trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium or tuba, including Georgia College's Brass Ensemble, a faculty-coached chamber ensemble directed by Dr. Cliff Towner, while the BMT builds the clinical musicianship needed to address varied client goals.

Audition Requirements

Additional Materials

Repertoire

Two contrasting solos, movements, or etudes from standard repertoire for the applicant's instrument

One selection should show technical facility and one should demonstrate lyrical playing

Scales & Technique

Applicants may be asked to play several major scales with arpeggios

Accompaniment

An accompanist is not required, but one may be provided upon request

Clinical Requirements

Clinical agencies may require background checks, drug screens, and health-care immunization standards

Students complete 180 pre-internship clinical hours before internship eligibility and 1200 total clinical internship hours

Transfer Pathway

GCSU evaluates transfer music coursework and applied-study placement for incoming Music Therapy students; the sequenced clinical and candidacy requirements still apply.

What's The Process

Entrance Audition/Interview

Brass applicants complete the Department of Music entrance audition using the published brass requirements

Prospective music therapy majors must pass an entrance audition and interview

The entrance audition/interview evaluates preparation level and introduces faculty to student potential

Video auditions are accepted and evaluated on a rolling schedule tied to the next audition date

Submit video links by 5:00 PM the Friday before the desired evaluation date

Instrument Details

Memorization is not required

A short sight-reading excerpt may be requested

Post-Enrollment Candidacy Gate

Freshman-level acceptance does not guarantee candidacy for the Bachelor of Music Therapy degree

At the conclusion of sophomore year, music therapy majors must pass a formal interview/audition for official BMT candidacy

The candidacy audition includes one principal-instrument piece plus self-accompaniment on guitar and piano with ten memorized songs on each instrument

Scholarship Consideration

Live in-person auditions automatically include scholarship consideration

Video auditioners may be asked for a live follow-up audition by livestream or in person for scholarship consideration
