Audition Process
•Honors Music Scholarship audition is for scholarship consideration only
•Audition is not required for program admission
•Audition is performed on the applicant's primary applied instrument or voice
•A video audition is accepted for applicants living a great distance away; arrangements must be made with the Department of Music
Audition Expectations
•Honors Music Scholarship auditions are held in O. Max Gardner Hall
•Total audition time is roughly one hour, including 30 minutes to warm up and/or rehearse with the staff accompanist and 30 minutes for the audition
•Voice: two contrasting selections — one aria, art song, or classical musical theater selection, and one art song in English; both memorized
•Band/Orchestra: two contrasting works, such as a sonata, concerto movement, or Grade 5-6 contest solo; major, minor, and chromatic scales; percussionists prepare a contest-level solo plus snare rudiments and mallet scales
•Piano: two contrasting pieces from different periods, with at least one memorized; major and minor scales with arpeggios plus a chromatic scale
•Guitar: two contrasting pieces from different periods, with at least one memorized; two major scales and an arpeggio study by Giuliani, Sor, Carcassi, or Carulli
•Organ: a work of J.S. Bach, a Romantic or 20th/21st-century work, and a hymn; major and minor scales with arpeggios plus a chromatic scale
•Additional elements: voice auditions include vocalizing, pitch-matching, and sight-reading; band/orchestra, piano, guitar, and organ auditions include sight-reading and pitch-matching
