Audition Requirements

Repertoire

•If you play in jazz band: bring KMEA audition music or a piece from your jazz folder

•Jazz Bass: one standard jazz piece of your choice from — All Blues, All the Things You Are, Days of Wine and Roses, Green Dolphin Street, How High the Moon, Just Friends, Satin Doll, So What, Take the A Train, There Will Never Be Another You (play the head and walk the changes; music provided by the bass teacher upon request)

Scales & Technique

•Jazz Bass: walking Bb and F blues changes, and a solo over Bb or F blues changes

•Wind/brass/percussion jazz: a passage from a solo, etude, or KMEA audition music plus a piece from your band music

•Admitted students take a music theory and aural-skills placement assessment for course placement only — it does not affect admission

Important Notes

•Audition required for admission to the BM Performance program

•The same audition also serves as scholarship consideration

•Eight credit hours in a single foreign language (German, French, or Italian) is required for the BM degree

Audition Process

•Schedule via the Fine Arts Scholarship Application on the Friends University website

•An accompanist is provided, or you may bring your own

Audition Expectations

•In-person auditions held on campus

•Virtual auditions available via Zoom or recorded submission

•Jazz instrumentalists prepare jazz repertoire on their principal instrument; bass applicants follow the jazz bass requirements below
