•Small classes, faculty instruction, visiting artists, and the Community Concert Hall give instrumentalists a supportive setting for advanced technical and collaborative growth.

Training

•The BA Music Performance major is designed for students who want to devote more of their elective study to developing as performers on an instrumental principal.

•Applied music study continues throughout the degree, supported by music theory, history, conducting, orchestration, piano proficiency, and ensemble coursework.

•The catalog requires a half recital of at least 30 minutes during the junior year and a full recital of at least one hour during the senior year.

Performance & Productions

•Performance students can participate in Band, Symphony Orchestra, Concert Choir, percussion ensemble, jazz ensemble, and other chamber ensembles.

Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Entrance Audition Repertoire

•Two contrasting solo pieces on your instrument (strings, woodwinds, brass, or keyboard)

•Scales and technical exercises

•Possible sight-reading of a short melodic and/or rhythmic excerpt

Sheet Music

•Sheet music: send electronic copies of your audition music to the music faculty at least two weeks before your scheduled audition

Dual Admission

•Apply for admission to Fort Lewis College through the Admission Office

•Submit the Performing Arts Department supplemental application form

•Acceptance to the Music Program does not guarantee admission to FLC, and vice versa

Placement

•Admitted students take a music theory placement exam at entrance — for course placement only, not admission

Transfer Pathway

FLC publishes transfer-credit review and community-college pathways for the BA Music Performance degree. Because the degree also requires an entrance audition and performance progression, transfer students should have prior credits reviewed while arranging the department audition.

What's The Process

Audition Format

•Dual admission: formal admission to the Music Program is by audition, separate from FLC admission

•Audition runs about ten minutes

•Prepare scales, technical exercises, and two contrasting solo pieces

•May be asked to sight-read a short melodic and/or rhythmic excerpt

•On-campus auditions are preferred; video auditions are available with department chair approval

Scheduling

•A music faculty member will contact you to schedule your audition after you submit the supplemental application form

•Option to audition during a Music Major for a Day campus visit
