Audition Requirements

Songs

Voice Repertoire

•Voice applicants prepare two songs

•One English art song

•One art song in Italian, German, French, or Spanish

•All songs must be memorized

Suggested Literature

•Art songs by Handel, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Debussy, Fauré, Quilter, Copland, and Burleigh

•Songs from the Twenty-four Italian Songs and Arias anthology are also acceptable

Additional Materials

Repertoire

•Instrumental applicants prepare two contrasting selections demonstrating both lyricism and technical dexterity (repertoire varies by instrument)

•Piano applicants prepare a Baroque composition, a Classical-period sonata movement in sonata form, and a Romantic, Impressionist, or Contemporary composition

•Guitar applicants prepare two solo pieces in contrasting styles

Scales & Technique

•Wind, brass, and percussion: chromatic plus major scales, ascending and descending across the full range of the instrument

•Strings: any major scale and one melodic minor in three octaves

•Piano: scales in two octaves, all major keys

•Guitar: three major scales of the student's choice from the Segovia Diatonic Major and Minor Scales

Sight-Reading

•Sight-reading may be requested at the discretion of the audition panel

Program Requirements

•NASM (National Association of Schools of Music) accredited

•All music majors with scholarships must be enrolled in a major ensemble in their applied area throughout the program of study

Theory Placement

•Admitted students take a music theory and aural-skills placement diagnostic at orientation — for course placement only, not admission

•Audition in your applied music area (instrument or voice)

•Auditions offered throughout the school year on an appointment basis

•Must have applied to and been accepted by the FSC Office of Admissions (or have a pending admission decision)

•Separate audition requirement to be accepted into the major
