These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

No audition is required for the initial application. This is an internal program gate students complete after enrolling at the university.Gateway source

Repertoire List

Prepare a brief musical selection, 5 minutes maximum, demonstrating musicianship and technical achievement.

Jazz musicians may perform unaccompanied or with a backing track; memorization is encouraged but not required for instrumental jazz.

Letters of Recommendation

The Applied Music inquiry form includes a letter of recommendation before the audition.

Application Logistics

Apply to El Camino College through the school's online application at elcamino.edu/apply.php; there is no separate admission audition or prescreen for the Music AA.

Any applicant 18+ or who has a high school diploma (or equivalent) qualifies for admission under California community college open-admission rules.

SAT and ACT scores are not considered for admission or scholarships.

The music department does not post a separate admission deadline; students follow the college's rolling admission and registration timelines.

Program Structure

The 2026-2027 catalog lists five Music AA areas of emphasis: Vocal, Instrumental Music, Keyboard, Commercial Music, and General Music.

Four semesters of Applied Music are part of the Music AA core; students audition for the Applied Music section that matches their instrument or voice area.

Enrollment

Applied Music auditions happen around the start of the fall and spring semesters and are separate from college admission.

Audition Process

Applied Music Gate

Applied Music (MUSI 190ABCD) is a required four-semester sequence for Music majors and requires a separate audition before students register.

Fall 2026 Applied Music auditions are tentatively scheduled for Thursday, August 20, 2026.

Students prepare a brief musical selection, 5 minutes maximum, demonstrating musicianship and technical achievement.

Accepted students must register in the correct Music 190 section by the Friday before instruction begins and enroll in a performance ensemble before adding Applied Music.
