Submitted Solo

Every applicant uploads a well-rehearsed one-minute solo or movement phrases in ballet, modern, jazz, or a combination with the application

Be the only dancer visible; the submitted solo is not performed again at the live audition

Recorded Video Only

Applicants unable to attend a group audition submit up to 10 additional minutes of class combinations: ballet barre, ballet center, modern, and jazz

Explain the reason for the video-only route in the application

Recorded Video Only

Video-only applicants include ballet barre and center combinations within the class-combination video; the total classwork video is no more than 10 minutes

Live candidates instead participate in faculty-taught ballet classwork described under the live dance requirements

Optional Additional Video

1-Minute video may show another dance or movement form such as hip hop, tap, martial arts, gymnastics, or ballroom

Audition Requirements

Dance

In-Person or Live Virtual Only

Live Audition Classwork

Participate in ballet, modern, and jazz combinations taught by ECU dance faculty

Participate in an improvisation session

Learn short combinations in the afternoon

Optional tap audition available for students with prior tap experience

Additional Materials

Attire & Footwear

Women: solid color leotards and pink or black tights

Men: solid fitted tops and black tights; pants are acceptable for jazz and improvisation sections

Ballet: ballet slippers required; pointe shoes are optional for dancers with extensive pointe experience

Modern: barefoot

Jazz: jazz shoes preferred; otherwise barefoot or ballet slippers

Tap: tap shoes required for the optional tap audition

Application Logistics

Apply to both the dance program via Acceptd and to ECU separately

Acceptance to both ECU and the dance program is required to pursue the degree

Enrollment

ECU Dance participates in Dancewave - Dancing Through College and Beyond auditions each October in New York

Transfer Pathway

ECU publishes a 2026-2027 NCCCS Associate in Arts transfer guide for BFA Dance with recommended courses before transfer and notes there is no transfer credit limit. Because the dance curriculum is sequential, ECU says transfer students should transfer as early as possible and expect 3-4 years at ECU.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Submit the Acceptd application and one-minute solo before completing the audition; the application also registers the applicant to audition

The published process does not require passing a separate prescreen to attend the live audition

In-person attendance is strongly encouraged; the current Acceptd form also offers a recorded-video alternative

The department page additionally describes a virtual group audition and video-only class-combination instructions; those detailed instructions are still published under the Fall 2026 entry cycle

The closed Acceptd form now publishes 2027 audition and submission dates; the department page still displays 2026 dates

Audition Expectations

Live candidates take faculty-taught ballet, modern, and jazz combinations, a group interview, improvisation, and short combinations

Optional tap is available for applicants with prior experience

The solo is uploaded for faculty review and is not repeated at the live audition

Acceptance by both ECU and the dance program is required
