Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire List

•Winds/Brass: prepare all major scales and four minor scales; perform a solo, concerto, sonata, or etude that demonstrates technique, execution, and lyrical playing; include sight-reading and another facet of your playing.

•Percussion: prepare keyboard-mallet major scales and a short solo excerpt or etude; demonstrate timpani tuning and a short excerpt or etude; prepare a snare-drum excerpt or etude and demonstrate stylistic versatility on drum set; include sight-reading.

•Strings: prepare one movement from a standard classical sonata or concerto, one movement of unaccompanied Bach or a similar etude, and three-octave scales up to three sharps/flats; sight-reading is included. An accompanist is recommended but not required.

•Guitar: prepare two-octave major and minor scales in any key, two memorized contrasting standard-repertoire pieces, and demonstrate basic right- and left-hand technique plus reading in first position.

•Piano proficiency exam required (placement exam before classes begin)

•Convocation attendance required each quarter (30 concerts per academic year)

•Major ensemble enrollment required every quarter

Transfer Pathway

EWU lists a current Spokane Falls Community College AFA Music articulation agreement that includes BM Instrumental Performance. Transfer students meet with the Music Program Director to map music courses and remaining degree requirements.
