Audition Requirements

Repertoire

Two prepared solo selections of contrasting styles (e.g. lyrical vs. technical) from the standard repertoire for your instrument

One etude or technical study (instrument-dependent)

Percussionists prepare snare drum, mallet/keyboard percussion, and timpani selections

Sight-reading: a short work selected at the audition

Scales & Technique

Major scales (and minor scales for most instruments); range and octave requirements vary by instrument

Accompaniment

Piano accompaniment is welcome but not required for instrumental auditions

Application Logistics

Submit the EMU university application prior to auditioning

Submit the School of Music & Dance undergraduate music application at least seven days before the selected audition date

Provide email addresses for two recommenders before starting the application

Complete the entrance audition by March 1 for priority scholarship consideration

Placement Exams (Post-Admission)

All incoming music students take a music theory exam on audition days — for course placement only, not admission

Piano placement exam optional for students with two to four years of keyboard experience — for course placement only

Participation in a performance ensemble is required in every music degree program

Important Notes

The Bachelor of Music in Music Performance is the most performance-intensive option, requiring junior and senior solo recitals

Audition Process

Complete the EMU university application before auditioning for the School of Music and Dance

Complete the undergraduate music application and select your principal instrument

In-person and remote audition options are available for 2026-2027

Audition Expectations

Instrumental applicants perform prepared repertoire, scales/technique, and sight-reading for faculty

Bachelor of Music in Performance candidates prepare two contrasting solos (the most demanding option among EMU degrees)

Remote auditionees post an unlisted YouTube video and send the link at least one day before the selected audition date

Percussionists should contact the audition coordinator in advance for equipment access

Decisions

Official audition results are mailed after faculty recommendations, normally within ten business days
