Audition Requirements

Dance

In-Person Audition

Ballet, modern/contemporary, and jazz components

One-minute solo in any dance genre performed for faculty immediately after the technical portion

Conservative dance attire requested

Bring ballet slippers, jazz shoes, and access to bare feet for modern

Video Audition

State your name, intended major/minor, and class standing

Ballet barre exercises: plies, tendus, degages, rond de jambe a terre, frappe, adagio at barre, and grand battements

Ballet center exercises: adagio, one pirouette combination, one small jump combination, and one grande allegro

One-minute solo in any dance genre

Additional Materials

Recommendation Forms (Required)

Two dance recommendation forms must be solicited before the audition date

Dance Background (Required)

Application asks for principal technique, years trained by genre, and a brief dance background summary

Good to Know

Application Logistics

Submit the EMU university application before auditioning for the department

Submit the School of Music and Dance undergraduate dance application at least seven days before the audition date

Remote audition videos are sent as unlisted YouTube links to the Dance faculty contact

Enrollment

Accepted dance majors/minors begin dance class sequences in Fall only

Important Notes

Students auditioning for dance major status are automatically considered for dance scholarships

Incoming dance majors must audition no later than March for scholarship consideration

What's The Process

Audition Process

Prospective dance students apply to EMU, submit the undergraduate dance application, and complete an audition

Dance application must be submitted at least seven days before the requested audition date

In-person and remote audition options are available

Audition Expectations

The audition assesses acceptance as a dance major/minor and technique placement level

Dance faculty expect at least intermediate proficiency in ballet and jazz and beginning-level modern dance

Decisions

Official audition results are normally mailed within ten business days
