Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

Two contrasting works (all-state etudes, solos, or band/orchestra excerpts recommended)

Scales & Technique

At least three major scales from memory (two octaves preferred) plus any minor scales you know

Sight-read a short musical example at the audition

Application Process

Two-step: apply to the university, then sign up for an audition with the School of Music

Submit the School of Music audition form for your area (Instrumental or Vocal)

Eligibility

Must be accepted by both the university and the School of Music

School of Music admission is based on audition and interview

Continuation requires admission to and retention in the Teacher Education Program (EPP) and completion of professional development coursework

Placement

Incoming freshmen take a music theory diagnostic test at the start of study for course placement only — it does not affect admission

Post-Enrollment Gate

After enrollment, music majors must pass the applied barrier exam to reach upper-division applied study

Students who do not pass on the second attempt are dismissed from the music program; upper-division applied credit must be completed at East Texas A&M
