Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

This program has a required admission audition and interview, plus a separate internal audition gate after enrollment. The gateway source documents the post-enrollment gate; admission requirement details may be separate.Gateway source

Repertoire

Two contrasting etudes (slow and fast) or portions of solo repertoire (lyrical and technical)

Performance-major applicants should also prepare a movement (or movements) from a standard concerto, sonata, or significant solo repertoire

Scales & Technique

All major scales and a full-range chromatic scale

Sight-read a short musical example at the audition

Application Process

Two-step: apply to the university, then sign up for an audition with the School of Music

Submit the School of Music audition form for your area (Voice, Instrumental, or Piano)

Eligibility

Must be accepted by both the university and the School of Music

School of Music admission is based on audition and interview

Placement

Incoming freshmen take a music theory diagnostic test at the start of study for course placement only — it does not affect admission

Post-Enrollment Gate

After enrollment, music majors must pass the applied barrier exam to reach upper-division applied study

Students who do not pass on the second attempt are dismissed from the music program; upper-division applied credit must be completed at East Texas A&M

Live in-person audition on campus (recorded video accepted when travel to Commerce is impractical)

Audition and interview with the School of Music

Perform prepared repertoire and technical material for the applied faculty

Sight-reading component

5-10 minutes of music that shows your playing at its best

Performance Scholarships

Available to music majors and non-majors based on audition results

Amount varies by student’s audition and potential contribution

Housing Scholarships

$500/semester credit toward on-campus housing

Available in addition to performance scholarships

Renewal Requirements

Music scholarship: maintain 2.75 cumulative GPA

Housing scholarship: maintain 3.00 cumulative GPA

Must meet ensemble and studio requirements each semester
