Dance video

•Up to 10 minutes is ideal

•May include excerpts from performance and/or rehearsal, edited together in succession

•Submit a separate supplement for each dance style if proficient in more than one style

•Style options: African Dance, Asian/Indian Dance, Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Jazz Dance, Modern, Other/Mixed Styles, Tap Dance

•Choreography in each area is welcome

•Solo or small group work is ideal

•If including large-group dance, identify yourself with highlighting/arrow or describe your place on stage

Slideroom form

•Title of works, choreographer, and music/sound accompaniment

•Date of recording

•Length of pieces/excerpt

•Ensemble identifying information, if applicable

•Any other pertinent context

APPLICATION LOGISTICS

•Optional dance arts supplement submitted through Duke SlideRoom as part of the Duke admissions process

•Arts supplement deadlines follow Duke admissions deadlines: Early Decision November 3, Regular Decision January 5, Transfer February 1-March 15

•Submit digital media through SlideRoom; do not mail artistic submissions

IMPORTANT NOTES

•Applicants are not required to major or minor in Dance after submitting a supplement

•Arts teacher recommendation is not required

What's The Process

AUDITION PROCESS

•No audition required — any student admitted to Duke University can major in Dance

•Dance faculty evaluate optional artistic supplements and can make recommendations to admissions

•A strong supplement may help your Duke application, but a low ranking will never hurt it

•Prospective students are welcome to observe or participate in selected classes with prior faculty approval

AUDITION EXPECTATIONS

•Solo or small group work is ideal

•If including a large group dance, make sure you can be easily identified (use highlighting, arrow, or describe your position)

•Performance situations preferred, but excerpts from technique class are acceptable

•Do not send large-group cheering or drill team routines

•Choreography samples welcome in addition to performance
