Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

Cello, Violin, or Viola: one movement of a major concerto

Cello, Violin, or Viola: two contrasting movements of Solo Bach, plus one movement of a sonata, contemporary work, or showpiece

Bass: two contrasting movements of a baroque sonata, or the first movement of a standard concerto plus a contrasting work

Bass: one etude on the level of Bille, Simandl, Storch-Hrabe, or Sturm, plus one orchestral excerpt of your choice

Classical Guitar: a technical study or piece by Sor, Aguado, or Carcassi

Classical Guitar: a work from the Renaissance or Baroque period, plus a solo Twentieth-Century work

Scales & Technique

Bass: a major or minor scale and arpeggio, three octaves, of your choice

Admission Pathway

Students can transfer between BMus and BA Music once enrolled

Five-year option available combining BM Performance with Music Education certification

Eligible for Accelerated MA in Musicology/Music Theory or MM in Composition

Placement

Admitted students take a music theory, ear-training, sight-singing and keyboard placement exam — for course placement only, not admission

Schedule audition via Acceptd

Registration deadline is one week prior to the instrument's audition date

Audition Expectations

Live audition before a panel of ACSM faculty

Fall entry: in-person auditions at Queens College (strongly encouraged and prioritized)

Spring entry: by video submission

Video submission accepted for applicants at a considerable distance

Accompaniment

Accompanists are not required for instrumentalists — you may bring one if you choose

Post-Enrollment

All applicants take the Music Placement Exam on audition day

Results determine course placement only — not recorded in permanent record
