Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

•Cello, Viola, or Violin: one movement of a major concerto, sonata, contemporary work, or showpiece

•Cello, Viola, or Violin: two contrasting movements of Solo Bach

•Double Bass: two contrasting movements of a baroque sonata, or the first movement of a standard concerto plus a contrasting work

•Double Bass: one etude on the level of Bille, Simandl, Storch-Hrabe, or Sturm, plus one orchestral excerpt of your choice

•Guitar: a technical study or piece by Sor, Aguado, or Carcassi

•Guitar: a work from the Renaissance or Baroque period, plus a solo twentieth-century work

Scales & Technique

•Double Bass: a major or minor scale and arpeggio, two octaves, of your choice

•Schedule audition via Acceptd

•Registration deadline is one week prior to the instrument's audition date

Audition Expectations

•Live audition before a panel of ACSM faculty

•Fall entry: in-person auditions at Queens College (strongly encouraged and prioritized)

•Spring entry: by video submission

•Video submission accepted for applicants at a considerable distance

Accompaniment

•Accompanists are not required for instrumentalists — you may bring one if you choose

Post-Enrollment

•All applicants take the Music Placement Exam on audition day

•Results determine course placement only — not recorded in permanent record
