The 22-unit Certificate in Guitar prepares students for a career as a professional guitarist, with coursework in sight-reading, technique, music theory, fret-board knowledge, ear-training, music history, and repertoire spanning jazz, classical, blues, rock, funk, and other popular genres. Students with no prior guitar experience are strongly advised to complete MUS 202 Group Guitar Lessons before starting the sequence. The 11-unit lower-division core covers three semesters of MUS 109 Private Lessons I plus MUS 161 Music Fundamentals and MUS 162 Music Theory and Analysis I; the 11-unit upper-division core adds two semesters of MUS 305 Guitar Ensemble, three semesters of MUS 309 Private Lessons II, MUS 366 Jazz and Blues Improvisation, MUS 385 Audio Recording, and a 3-unit elective. The certificate culminates in a senior recital/lecture or CD recording project.
