Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Songs

Two Contrasting Selections

Two contrasting art songs, or one art song and one musical theater song

Musicianship

Be prepared to sing major and minor scales

Sight-read a single-line melody

Chant or count a rhythmic pattern

Accompaniment

You may bring a pianist, or an accompanist will be provided for a fee

Transfer Students

Must include a repertory list of all songs studied at the college level

Admitted music majors take music theory and piano placement exams at orientation — for course placement only, not for admission

Certification

Every music major must pass a placement audition and interview to be admitted to the program

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

In-person placement audition and interview at the Schwob School of Music

BME applicants audition on a principal instrument or voice and are held to the same performance standards as performance majors

Apply to CSU at least four weeks before your audition date

Audition Process

Prepare repertoire appropriate to your principal instrument or voice (see the undergraduate audition requirements page)

Be prepared to play or sing scales and to sight-read

A teaching-disposition interview with a music faculty member is part of the audition

Students auditioning on or before April are automatically eligible for a music scholarship; results are typically sent by mid-April
