Reserve a music placement audition through the Schwob School of Music website

Placement Exams

Admitted music majors take music theory and piano placement exams at orientation — for course placement only, not for admission

Curriculum

At least 66 of the 120 credit hours are earned in disciplines outside of music

Students choose a track within the School of Music (composition, general audio technology, piano technology, or public musicology) or a minor in another department

Enrollment

Every music major must pass a placement audition and interview to be admitted to the program

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

In-person placement audition and interview at the Schwob School of Music

Every prospective music major must audition on a principal instrument or voice to be admitted to the music program

Apply to CSU at least four weeks before your audition date

Audition Process

Prepare repertoire appropriate to your principal instrument or voice (see the undergraduate audition requirements page)

Voice applicants: two contrasting art songs, or one art song and one musical theater song

Be prepared to play or sing scales and to sight-read; voice applicants also chant or count a rhythmic pattern

A short interview with a music faculty member is part of the audition

Students auditioning on or before April are automatically eligible for a music scholarship; results are typically sent by mid-April
