Audition Requirements

Songs

Requirements

•Two Musical Theatre SELECTIONS, 32 bars each

•One ballad and one uptempo, contrasting in style

•Each cut should be at least 32 bars with a 2–4 bar piano introduction

•Each should not exceed approximately one minute

•One song must be written before 1965

•Both must be memorized

Accompaniment

•Sing with recorded or live accompaniment — no a cappella

•Bring sheet music to in-person auditions (live accompaniment provided)

•Edit both selections into one video file for upload

•Label your video with the titles of both songs

Monologues

Monologue Requirements

•One contemporary monologue, 1 minute

•Must be memorized

Material Guidelines

•Perform the monologue in the context of the entire play

•Choose material appropriate for your age and experience

•The monologue must come from an existing published play

Video Labeling

•Label your video with the title of the play

Dance

Movement Demonstration

•Prepare choreography that showcases your movement ability

•Set it to a musical theatre song, with lyrics or instrumental accompaniment

Requirements

•Video Submission

•Record it in one take from start to finish, without cuts or edits

•Submit it via video with the application only

In-Person Audition

•It is not performed during the in-person audition session

Optional Additional Video

•A video from a performance (singing, dancing, and/or acting) within the previous 18 months, max 2 min

•OR a wild card video (special skill, unique dance style, contemporary dance, instrumental performance, etc.)

•Direct upload or YouTube/Vimeo link with exact time code

Additional Materials

Resume

•Include training and experience in theatre, music, and dance

•Include academic honors, work experience, and community service

Headshot

•Headshot or graduation portrait preferred

•Otherwise photograph against a neutral background

Personal Statement

•One page, single-spaced

•Address: what interests you about the musical theatre degree and CSU Theatre

•Address: what skills, interests, and experiences you want to develop

•Address: where you see yourself in five years

What's The Process

Audition Process

•Submit application and upload all videos via Acceptd

•Application opens in September

•Applications after official dates considered on space-available basis

Audition Expectations

•Perform monologue and singing selections for faculty

•Interview with musical theatre faculty

•Movement video, optional video, and supporting materials uploaded via Acceptd

•Schedule in-person session time after application is complete

•Upload monologue, singing, movement, and all materials via application

•Schedule a Zoom interview with musical theatre faculty

•Reserved for out-of-state applicants and Colorado applicants outside NoCo/Denver

•In-person required for students in Northern Colorado or Denver metro area

•Virtual option for out-of-state or outside NoCo/Denver, or under extenuating circumstances

•Email SMTD@colostate.edu with questions about virtual eligibility

Decisions

•Decisions emailed by March 15 for applicants who met official deadlines

•Later applications on rolling basis, space-available
