Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

Three selections total for the piano major audition:

Two contrasting pieces (one from List 1, one from List 2 below)

One etude from Czerny Op. 299, 335, 740, or 849

At least one piece or etude performed from memory

Complete the Online Music Theory Assessment before audition day

Music Theory & Piano Placement

Music majors complete a music theory placement exam and a piano proficiency assessment

Covers note names, key names from key signatures, time signatures, scales, intervals, and triads

For course placement only — does not affect admission

What's The Process

Audition Process

In-person audition or recorded video submission accepted

Includes CMU music orientation, music theory placement exam, and audition performance

Audition also serves as scholarship audition

Confirm repertoire with your area instructor before the audition

Bring your audition sheet music to on-campus auditions

Sight-reading ability is assessed at the audition

Record in landscape orientation from a fixed camera position with good natural acoustics

Video must clearly show your full face, entire body, and instrument

No digital alteration of video or audio; recordings must be from within the last year

Upload to YouTube as unlisted — no other platforms accepted; include performer name in the title

Slate each selection: name, title of composition, composer

Email video links to your area instructor and indicate it is your online audition
