Audition Requirements
Dance
TECHNIQUE CLASS (required)
•Participate in an intermediate/advanced technique class
•Typically a contemporary dance class — applicants notified if different style
•Welcome to observe or participate in other technique/lecture courses with faculty approval
SOLO PERFORMANCE (required)
•Perform a solo no longer than 3 minutes
•Any style of dance — should highlight your strengths
•May be self-choreographed or choreographed by someone else
•Bring music on iPhone/laptop or CD
Additional Materials
HEADSHOT (required)
•Submit with online audition application
RESUME (required)
•Detail training, performance, choreographic, and teaching experience in dance and/or theatre/music
•Submit with online audition application
TRANSCRIPT (required)
•Official high school transcript to Department of Theatre Arts
•Separate from CMU Admissions requirement
•Transfer students: transcripts from all colleges attended
•Bring copies to morning check-in on audition day

APPLICATION PROCESS
•Complete departmental audition application online — include headshot, resume, and video link (if video audition)
•Apply separately to CMU through Common App or school website
PREPARATION
•Students should have prior training in multiple dance styles (ballet, jazz, modern, tap, hip-hop)
•Additional skills in improvisation, choreography, composition, and dance science are beneficial
What's The Process
AUDITION FORMAT
•Two parts: technique class followed by solo performance
•Brief interview/Q&A with faculty after solo
•In-person auditions highly preferred
VIDEO AUDITION OPTION
•Video must include classwork in several dance styles (ballet barre, across-the-floor combinations, floor work, etc.)
•Solo performance video: 3 min max, any style, highlight your strengths
•Zoom interview required after video materials are reviewed
