Training
•The instrumental track of Christopher Newport's BM in Music covers brass, woodwinds, percussion, strings and keyboard, with applied study every semester and required junior and senior recitals.
•Students take a literature and pedagogy course matched to their instrument family — String, Keyboard, Woodwind, Brass or Percussion Literature and Pedagogy — rather than a single generic survey.
•The shared BM core adds theory and chromatic harmony, extended tonal techniques and atonality, two years of ear training, three semesters of Western music history, world music, improvisation, music technology and conducting.
•Professional instruction is offered on all woodwind, brass, percussion and string instruments as well as piano, harpsichord and organ.
Performance & Productions
•Instrumentalists take eight credits across Wind Ensemble, University Orchestra, Marching Band and University Band, plus four credits of chamber ensemble — Percussion Ensemble for percussionists.
•Eight semesters of performance attendance and masterclass are required.
Facilities
•The Ferguson Center for the Arts is the department's principal performance venue.
