Training
•Music Studies is Christopher Newport's broad-based BA concentration for students who want a full musician's education without the recital-driven load of the BM.
•Coursework spans theory and chromatic harmony, two years of ear training, three semesters of Western music history, world music, improvisation, music technology, and choral or instrumental conducting.
•Applied lessons run through the sophomore year alongside four semesters of piano and a chamber ensemble credit.
•Nine credits of non-music electives plus six upper-level non-music credits leave room for a second field of study.
Performance & Productions
•Students take eight credits of large ensemble, choosing among Wind Ensemble, University Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Women's Chorus, Men's Chorus, Marching Band and University Band, plus eight semesters of performance attendance.
Professional Development
•The concentration closes with a capstone project, exit examinations in theory, ear training and music history, and the ETS Music Field Test — a useful credential for graduate study.
