Training
•The BA Music Church Music concentration combines CAU’s shared music core—music theory, music history and literature, applied study, ensembles, and special skills—with Church Music coursework.
•The catalog lists Introduction to Church Music and Church Music Methods among the concentration’s junior-level requirements.
•CAU’s learning outcomes emphasize knowledge of repertoire and performance practices found in mainstream African American churches.
Performance & Productions
•Church Music students audition on a chosen instrument or as a vocalist and can participate in CAU’s large and small ensembles.
•Department ensembles include the Philharmonic Society concert choir, Concert and Marching Bands, Jazz Orchestra, and the Atlanta University Center-wide Symphony Orchestra.
•The concentration connects applied performance and ensemble work to church repertoire, methods, and the traditions of African American worship music.
Degree Flexibility
•All prospective Music majors complete university admission, music audition, interview, and theory/piano placement steps; the department then approves concentration progress.
•Church Music students are approved after satisfactory academic progress through sophomore year and a recommendation from the concentration coordinator.
