Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Songs

Jazz Voice Audition

•Sing one jazz standard in medium swing.

•Sing a second jazz standard in a contrasting feel, such as latin, waltz, or ballad.

•Sing a 12-bar blues.

•Include an improvised scat solo on at least one song.

Technical Skills

•Prepare scales and two jazz etudes using scat syllables.

•Be ready for sight-singing, pitch matching, rhythm clapping, and triad identification.

Additional Materials

Video

•Submit audition video materials if completing the performance audition by video.

•Use a video link that lets faculty clearly see and hear the performance.

•The Jazz Department may request supplementary materials if there are technical problems with the video submission.

•Domestic applicants pay C$50; international applicants pay C$135. Each fee covers up to 2 programs.

What's The Process

Audition Process

•Jazz Voice applicants complete the Jazz Studies performance audition, aural skills assessment, sight-reading, and music theory assessment.

•CapU lists an interview as a program-specific requirement in addition to the Jazz Studies audition.

•Applicants should list voice in the comments section of the EducationPlannerBC application.

•Applicants are ranked against others auditioning on the same concentration instrument until seats are filled.
