Audition Requirements

Dance

Audition Class

First-time/first-year applicants take a faculty-led audition class with phrase work in modern/contemporary, ballet, jazz, and street/club dance

Applicants choose two of the listed dance styles

Transfer Solo

Transfer applicants present a 2-3 minute solo choreographed by the applicant in a dance style of their choice

Bring music on a mobile device for in-person transfer auditions

Video Option

Video auditions are available by email request after submitting the Cal State Apply application

Application Logistics

Apply via Cal State Apply and indicate Dance as the preferred major

After submitting the university application, email dance@csulb.edu to request the Department of Dance Audition Application

Fall 2027 first-year and transfer application period is October 1 to November 30, 2026

Spring 2027 transfer application period is July 1 to August 31, 2026

Eligibility

BFA applicants must complete DANC 100/300, DANC 120, DANC 161, DANC 182, 1 unit from DANC 181 or DANC 381, and 10 units of technique from at least 3 dance forms

Minimum 3.0 GPA in BFA prerequisite coursework

Students may not apply once they have completed 90 Timely Graduation Units

Enrollment

All undergraduate dance majors enter in the BA in Dance program

BFA Dance is an internal pathway after completing prerequisite coursework

What's The Process

Audition Process

Prospective dance majors for all degree paths participate in the CSULB Dance admissions audition after applying through Cal State Apply

The admissions audition includes a completed Department of Dance Audition Application and an audition

In-person auditions are encouraged; video auditions are available by email request after submitting the university application

Audition Expectations

First-time/first-year applicants take a faculty-led audition class with phrase work in modern/contemporary, ballet, jazz, and street/club dance

Transfer applicants take the audition class and present a 2-3 minute self-choreographed solo

Post-Enrollment

All undergraduate dance majors begin in BA Dance; BFA admission is an internal pathway after prerequisite coursework

Students wishing to pursue BFA Dance must audition for the BFA program after the required coursework with a minimum 3.0 GPA

Students may not apply to BFA after completing 90 Timely Graduation Units

Complete the BeachScholarships application to be considered for College of the Arts and university-wide scholarships

FAFSA or CADAA required for most need-based scholarships

Department Scholarships

The Department of Dance does not offer scholarships to incoming undergraduate students

Continuing students may audition for department scholarships each spring; awards are based on need and merit and applied to the following academic year
