Audition Requirements

Portfolio

Submit scores and recordings of 2-3 original pieces with varying instrumentation

Electronic portfolio submission is preferred

Portfolio may include any style, including electronic/electroacoustic works

Portfolio scores should show evidence of skill in written musical notation

Repertoire

Also perform a 15-minute audition on your primary instrument or voice following that area's repertoire guidelines

Two contrasting pieces of about 3-5 minutes each; if composition or songwriting is your focus, one should be an original work

Apply through Cal State Apply from August 1 through November 30, 2026 for Fall 2027 entry

Complete the Music Department Supplemental Application by January 11, 2027 (opens October 1, 2026)

Submit composition scores and recordings electronically when the current department supplement opens

Cal Poly Pomona is campus-impacted for first-time freshmen; Music is not listed among the program-impacted majors for Fall 2027

Admission Pathway

Admitted students take a music theory and aural-skills placement exam at orientation — for course placement only, not admission

Audition Process

Required to audition to qualify for the BM Composition program

15-minute audition slot including setup and takedown, with a short interview component

In-person audition strongly encouraged; contact dpuentes@cpp.edu for alternate arrangements

Audition Expectations

Big-picture evaluation of overall potential as a musician and composer

Scores and recordings reviewed alongside the live audition
