Prescreen Requirements

Songs

Song Selection

Prepare two musical theatre excerpts

Include one ballad and one uptempo selection

Include one excerpt in classical or legit golden-age style and one in contemporary mix or belt style

Keep both excerpts to 3 minutes combined

Performance Notes

Choose material that suits your voice and interpretive ability

Emotional and acting connection is part of the evaluation

Do not submit performance reels

Upload the song video through SlideRoom by the December 1, 2026 deadline

Monologues

Prepare two contrasting monologues from established play, musical, or film scripts

Include one comedic selection and one serious or dramatic selection

Keep each monologue under 2 minutes and both together under 4 minutes

Slate with your name and the plays your monologues are from; say thank you when finished

Selection Guidelines

Use contemporary material from the last 50 years and from published scripts

Do not use Shakespeare or other classic or ancient playwrights

Avoid dialect or accent material, storytelling pieces, and material without a clearly identifiable scene partner

Choose real, natural language that fits your type and shows honest emotion

Dance

Dance Video

Submit Sequence 1: Cinderella Dance Audition; required for all applicants

Sequence 2: Across the Floor; optional for advanced dancers

Sequence 3: dancer's choice; optional if neither sequence showcases your talents and skills, no longer than 1 minute

If submitting multiple sequences, combine them into one video

Filming

Show your entire body from head to toe

Wear attire similar to the demonstrators in the instruction videos

Upload the dance video as instructed on SlideRoom

Additional Materials

Essay (Required)

Submit the essay requested in the MDT SlideRoom application

Letters of Recommendation (Required)

Submit one letter of recommendation with the MDT prescreen package

Transcript (Required)

BYU's public MDT application page does not publish separate callback song, monologue, or dance material in advance

Invited applicants should follow the emailed live-audition instructions

Acceptance is for Fall 2027

Transfer Pathway

Hopeful transfer students may audition for MDT through the same prescreen and invited live-audition process as high-school seniors and current BYU students. Applicants may audition up to three times or until they reach 60 earned credit hours, whichever comes first.

Audition Expectations

The MDT FAQ says there are no callbacks after the invited live audition

Final incoming-class decisions are expected in mid-March

Tma Student Scholarships

TMA Student Scholarships for 2027 are due September 30, 2026; the application opens in late August

TMA Emergency Scholarships accept applications continuously

Eligibility

TMA majors and minors, including pre-majors, may apply

Awards are applied directly to the student financial account

Mdt Talent Award

All students auditioning for MDT are automatically considered for a talent award or scholarship
