Contrasting styles required

Optional: one musical theatre piece in addition to classical selections

Basic musicianship assessment: pitch matching, rhythm patterns, and sight-reading

Admitted students take an online music theory placement exam about 3 weeks after the audition — for course placement only, not admission

What's The Process

Audition Process

Voice applicants must pass a video pre-screening (one solo piece with accompaniment) before being invited to a live audition; not required for other instruments

Audition Expectations

Classical repertoire on your principal instrument or voice; requirements vary by instrument family (brass, woodwind, percussion, piano, strings, voice) per Butler’s published audition requirements

Piano and strings: two solos or contrasting pieces from two different historical style periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, or 20th/21st Century); memorization is encouraged

Keyboard placement assessment and a musicianship placement exercise on audition day — for course placement only, not part of the admission decision
