Training
•Applied Piano pairs four years of individual composition study with classical piano at the faculty-studio level for composers who already play at a skilled level
•The composition curriculum develops personal artistic voice through rigorous theory, history, performance, Composers' Forum, and collaborative projects
Degree Flexibility
•The optional placement audition is performed from memory and includes a J. S. Bach prelude and fugue, a Classical-era sonata movement, and a short Romantic, twentieth-century, or contemporary work
•Passing places the composer in a piano faculty studio; students who decline or do not pass enter Standard Piano with doctoral teaching-assistant keyboard study
•Time's Arrow, electronic and computer music facilities, competitions, and cross-CFA production work give pianist-composers multiple ways to develop and present new music
