Repertoire
•Prepared repertoire begins with the head from a traditional jazz tune (Charlie Parker Omnibook, traditional bebop heads, or comparable source)
•A lead chart selection from a big band tune — appropriate style matters more than range
•A solo demonstrating improvisation skills, with a play-along backing track provided
•Saxophone applicants also prepare a transcription or etude of a notable jazz artist
•Drum set applicants prepare solos across swing, big band, fusion, rock, and Latin styles, plus brushes, trading fours, and reading big band chart figures
•Jazz audition pieces are offered on saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drum set, bass, piano, and guitar — schedule with the area faculty member (trumpet applicants must also be accepted into the trumpet studio)
Scales & Technique
•Saxophone: all major scales full range in eighth notes at MM = 120 and arpeggios full range, using foundational jazz articulation
