Optional interview for scholarship consideration only; it is not required for program admission.

Portfolio / Creative Sample

Composition portfolio: submit three pieces - written scores of three original compositions, OR two original compositions plus one arrangement

Creative sample requirement: works must be in contrasting style, mood, and instrumentation

Creative sample media: if possible, include a recorded performance, MIDI file, or video of each piece using the scored instrumentation

Creative sample statement: include one paragraph per selection describing how and why you wrote it

Creative sample arrangement note: for an arrangement, identify the exact title of the original composition

Portfolio submission: email the Division of Music (subject line: your name + "Composition Portfolio") or share via Google Drive

Important Notes

February 1 deadline for music merit scholarship consideration

Applications accepted after this date but may not be eligible for scholarships

Scholarship is merit-based, evaluated through audition submission

Secondary piano is required (declared and auditioned during Welcome Week and Pre-Registration); students who test out replace those credits with music electives

Admitted students take a music theory placement test for course placement only — it does not affect admission

What's The Process

Audition Process

Music is a dual-admission program

Students must be accepted to both BJU and the Division of Music

Step 1: Apply for admission to BJU

Step 2: Complete the Division of Music section of the BJU application and submit composition portfolio materials

A performance audition on your declared principal (keyboard, orchestral instrument, or voice) is also required

Audition and portfolio review also serve as initial application for music merit scholarship consideration

Post-Enrollment

Sight-reading is assessed at the beginning of the first semester of study (for course placement, not admission)

Secondary Piano Proficiency Placement Test during Welcome Week for non-keyboard principals

Scholarship awards are subject to an interview with the scholarship committee

Renewable annually for up to four years

Requires a 2.0 overall GPA and 3.0 music GPA for renewal
