Audition Requirements

Songs

Requirements

Three contrasting song cuts, each 60 seconds or less

One traditional musical theatre song written before 1967 that displays a classical sound

One contemporary musical theatre song

One pop/rock or commercial song not from a musical

Accompaniment

Belmont provides a live piano accompanist

Bring well-marked, legible sheet music in the correct key; no lead sheets or chord charts

Monologues

Requirements

One memorized monologue, 60 seconds or less

Choose age-appropriate material from a play or musical

Dance

In-Person

Participate in a group dance class of approximately 75 minutes and learn several short combinations

Video Audition

Submit a live solo dance video, 60 seconds or less

Do not submit footage from a previous performance

The dance may be choreographed by you or an outside teacher

Recorded music is permitted

Headshot

Bring a hard-copy 8x10 headshot to an in-person audition

Resume

Upload a performance resume in BU4U under Audition Activities List/Resume

The resume should list musical theatre roles, other music activities, awards, solo performances, and instruments played

Application Logistics

The audition determines admission to the School of Music separately from the university admission decision

The Fall 2027 university application opens August 1, 2026

Musical Theatre applicants must complete the university application by December 1, 2026

What's The Process

Audition Process

A prescreen is required before an applicant may complete an in-person or video audition

Apply to Belmont first, then follow the BU4U instructions to upload the prescreen and register for an audition

Applicants who pass the prescreen choose an in-person audition date or the prerecorded video option

Video Guidelines

Video auditions must include audio and video

A phone, tablet, or computer is acceptable; professional equipment is not required

Production effects, video/audio editing, and external microphones are not permitted

Scholarship Info

Eligibility

Automatically considered for School of Music talent-based scholarships when you audition

Approximately 25-30% of entering students receive awards

Renewable for up to four years with full-time enrollment and 3.0 GPA
