Post-Enrollment Interview and Portfolio Requirements

No interview and portfolio is required for the initial application. The optional scholarship review (interview and portfolio) is separate from the internal interview and portfolio gate students complete after enrollment.Gateway source

Portfolio

Prepare and present a portfolio of design and production work

Include examples from realized theatre productions and class projects when available

Materials may include research, organizational paperwork, visual production documentation, sketches, renderings, drafting, pattern drafts, lighting plots, lighting sections, or other design paperwork

Work that demonstrates process as well as final product is encouraged

Eligibility

Must indicate theatre as intended major when applying to Auburn University

Admission Pathway

Students begin in the BA Theatre during the first two years

Entrance into the BFA Design and Technology program is through portfolio review and interview in spring of sophomore year

First two years focus on broader theatre education, technical skills, design/tech coursework, and main-stage production work

Program Requirements

Minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA for BFA consideration

Completion of departmental production participation is required before BFA review

Important Notes

Students are not required to audition to declare a theatre major

BFA admission is by portfolio review and interview in spring of sophomore year

Transfer Pathway

Transfer students entering as sophomores or juniors may submit a portfolio directly for entrance into the BFA Design/Technology track at Scholarship Day, skipping the two years as a BA Theatre major that incoming freshmen must complete before the internal sophomore-year portfolio review.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Incoming design/tech applicants may present a portfolio and interview for departmental scholarship consideration

On-campus Scholarship Day/open-house event is October 17, 2026

Virtual presentation/interview option is available by arrangement before November 13, 2026

Audition Expectations

Interviews, presentations, class experience, and tours begin at 9:00 a.m. Central Time during Scholarship Day

Portfolio materials may include realized productions, class projects, research material, organizational paperwork, and visual documentation

Post-Enrollment

Entrance into the BFA Design and Technology program is through portfolio review and interview in spring of sophomore year

Candidates must demonstrate creative potential, maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA, and complete departmental production participation

Scholarship Info

Departmental Scholarship

One-year departmental scholarship awards are available to outstanding students who participate in on-site or virtual interviews and portfolio presentations

Eligibility

Open to students intending to major in Theatre who have maintained a 3.0 GPA

University Scholarships

Must also register through AUSOM for college- and university-level scholarship consideration

Larger scholarship amounts are awarded through AUSOM at the College of Liberal Arts and university level
