Audition Requirements

Songs

Two Musical Theatre Selections (Each 1-2 Minutes in Length)

Contrasting time periods and/or styles demonstrating versatility, vocal quality and range

These should be cuts, not full songs

Monologues

One Monologue

Memorized with clear character choices made, 60-90 seconds in length

Choose from one of the following options:

A monologue of your choosing from a published play or musical

A monologue from this approved list of monologues: musicdancetheatre.asu.edu

Dance

You will be taught two brief combinations on the day of the audition

Wear comfortable movement or dance attire and character shoes that are easy to move in

Dressing rooms are available in which to change before and after the dance audition

The dance call will take place prior to the singing audition

If Sending in A Recording

MUSIC THEATRE COMBINATION: There are three levels from which to choose. Pick the level that best suits your knowledge of dance and you can execute with your best individual efforts and ability: dropbox.com

Create a piece that has some connection to the music such as story or emotion

Choose a style you feel showcases yourself best

Additional Materials

Repertoire List

Your repertoire list should include all solo repertoire studied

It is not necessary to list choral repertoire unless you were a featured soloist

It is appropriate to list any roles you have performed

Resume

List any training (voice, acting, dance) and performance experience

Letters of Recommendation

Provide names and email addresses for three recommenders; each recommender receives submission instructions by email

Statement

Submit a 300–500 word essay describing your educational background, objectives and career plans

What's The Process

Audition Process

Admission is highly selective and based on the audition process

Students must complete both the ASU undergraduate application and the School of Music, Dance and Theatre music application

Students admitted to ASU but not yet admitted to the School of Music, Dance and Theatre remain music audition students until they pass the milestone audition

On-campus auditions are offered November 14, 2026 for spring admission and January 23, February 6, February 13, and February 20, 2027 for fall admission

Recorded auditions are due February 1, 2027 and require attendance at the February 13, 2027 Virtual Experience Day

Audition Expectations

Prepare two contrasting musical theatre cuts, one memorized monologue, and the dance assessment taught on audition day

Live auditions receive scholarship preference

ASU accompanists are available for on-campus auditions if repertoire information is submitted within 48 hours of the schedule email

Bring double-sided piano scores in a three-ring binder for the accompanist

Recorded auditions may use recorded accompaniment, but live piano accompaniment is preferred

Eligibility

All music majors automatically considered for merit-based scholarships

Faculty strongly recommend live audition — live auditions receive scholarship preference

Undergraduate students may be considered for scholarship for up to eight semesters
