Audition Requirements

Repertoire List

Audition on voice or your primary instrument with material from the current Texas UIL Prescribed Music List (PML); non-PML works may be approved by the audition chair in advance

Voice repertoire: one memorized song from the PML, any grade

Piano repertoire: one memorized composition from the PML, any grade

Strings repertoire: one PML composition, any grade

Woodwind/brass repertoire: one PML composition, any grade, or the All-Region audition material

Percussion repertoire: one snare drum, one timpani, and one keyboard composition, any grade; drum set is optional but encouraged

Scales & Technique

Piano: white-key major scales, hands together, one octave, eighth-notes at quarter = 90

Strings: one- or two-octave scales

Woodwinds and brass: major scales plus the chromatic scale

Percussion: major scales on keyboard, one octave, eighth-notes at quarter = 90

Sight-read as part of the audition; percussionists sight-read on snare drum

Accompaniment

A staff accompanist is available at no charge, or you may bring your own; you only need to provide a copy of your music if you need the school accompanist

Application Logistics

Apply through Common App or ApplyTexas for university admission

Audition and acceptance into the music program are required in addition to university admission

Transfer students complete regular university admission plus the music audition, and take music theory and aural skills placement exams (transcripts required before full acceptance and placement)

Degree Pathway

120 credit hours within a broad liberal arts framework, balancing applied study, ensembles, theory, and history

Requires a minor area of 18 credit hours outside of music for interdisciplinary breadth

Admitted students take a music theory placement exam at orientation for course placement only, not admission

Transfer Pathway

Transfer applicants audition under the same process as first-year applicants, then complete music theory and aural-skills placement exams; prior coursework transcripts determine full acceptance and placement in this General Music Studies curriculum.

Arrive 15-30 minutes early; practice rooms are available for warm-up

The audition takes approximately one hour

Audition Expectations

Take the Music Theory diagnostic exam
