Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Dance

Dance Solo Submission: Upload 1-minute dance solo (Ballet or Modern) showcasing technique

Ballet Audition: Submit video demonstrating barre and center work (maximum 10 minutes)

Barre exercises: plié, tendu, rond de jambe, etc

Center work: adagio, pirouettes, petite and grand allégro

Classical variation (no longer than 2 minutes)

Attire: Black leotard, skin-toned tights, ballet slippers (skin-toned) or pointe shoes, hair in a bun, makeup required

Modern Audition: Submit video recording (maximum 8 minutes)

Warm-up exercises: floor work, standing exercises, core work

Center work: jumping sequences

2-minute modern dance solo

Attire: Black leotard, black tights, no coverage of feet, hair in a bun, makeup required

Admission Pathway

Admission to Alabama State University is required in addition to acceptance to the BFA Dance program

Transfer Pathway

Alabama State publishes an Area V BFA Dance guide for Alabama community-college transfer planning. The guide pairs with the AGSC articulation guide and states that up to 64 two-year college credits may transfer toward the degree, subject to ASU evaluation.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Online audition submissions are accepted year-round for admission to the BFA Dance major/minor and scholarship consideration

In-person auditions are held on campus when scheduled; no future in-person dates have been posted on the official audition page after the now-past Fall 2025-2026 dates

Auditions take place in the Deborah Scott Thomas Dance Studios, Tullibody Fine Arts Building, 845 S Jackson St, Montgomery, AL 36104

Audition Expectations

The scheduled in-person audition day may run until 3:00 p.m., but may conclude earlier

Submit the online audition as early as possible if you want scholarship consideration
